Stone-roasted sweet potato

February 7, 2007

Stone-roasted sweet potato is one of Japanese rites of winter.

When I was a kid, I saw stone-roasted sweet potato vendors almost everyday in winter. They carried potatoes put in special wagons. I feel nostalgic when I hear vendors announcement. It’s like “Stone-roasted sweet potato… sweet potato… sweet potato… sweet potato… Why don’t you taste very sweet and warm potatoes”. These are very simple words, but I remember days I played outside with my old friends and family.

I think you may have this kind of memories. All Japanese know stone-roasted sweet potato vendors and have the same feeling as mine probably. It costs between 200 yen and 500 yen. Do you think it’s expensive? Maybe you do. It’s just potatoes, but it deserves to me because of memories.

Recently I have hardly found the vendors. I don’t know why. Maybe it’s not profitable business. However I don’t wanna lose this rite, because sometimes memories make your feeling warm.
